I’ve spent countless days, weekends and months traversing different landscapes and countries, and like most people who enjoy the freedom of traveling light, I went with the best backpacks I could find. But no matter how light my gear was, I still had the typical strains on my knees, shoulders and neck. As new innovations make lighter gear for the outdoors, it seems that the way we carry our gear has remained the same.

The Monowalker Fatmate now folds completely without tools and fits at only 110cm length into any car trunk, airplane, on a quad bike or in the cargo bay of a helicopter. Ideal if you want to stay mobile in the most remote regions of the world. Take off the wheel by loosening the quick-release axle. Open the quick-release levers for the handlebars, rear triangle and carbon cargo platform fold down all parts to the main frame. The Monowalker Fatmate can thus also be carried as an “outdoor-hand-truck” in  emergency vehicles of disaster relief organizations, industrial climbers, and tree surgeons, facilitating access to the work site with heavy equipment.

When developing the Monowalker Fatmate hiking trailer, we had one goal in mind – to be self-sufficient, far away from civilization with equipment and food for days on foot, and to get along comfortably despite the heavy weight of the equipment and difficult terrain. The Monowalker Fatmate is not only made for any outdoor adventure far away from civilisation. It is an operational range and autonomy extender for professional use . Where ever you walk or work with the Fatmate, it does not matter if there is a path, if snowfields obstruct the way or the ground is muddy. With 4 “(10 cm) wide Fattire tires you can move reliably over any terrain. The width of the tire prevents the trailer from sinking, even with heavy luggage and loses ground.

Technology that reduces your gear weight

Thanks to the special geometry of the Monowalker Fatmate, you will carry half of your gear weight on your hips without sacrificing comfort. The other half of the gear weight is on the rear wheel. With this advantage, any hike becomes a pleasure. By using the Fatmate rack, with additional side-panniers you can reduce the gear weight on your body by 70-80%.

Monowalker Loadbag LB XTR 40

The Monowalker LB XTR 40 loadbag has a volume of 40 liters and transforms into a fully functional backpack when combined with our Monowalker SL-X Carbon fiber Packframe. Thanks to its practical roll-top closure, the volume can be adjusted. Unwrapped, it can also be used to carry bulky, extra-long equipment. Despite its variable length of 60–70 cm ( 24-28″), it weighs only 1 kg (2,2lbs) , or 2.9 kg (6,4 lbs) with the Monowalker SL-X Carbon Packframe.

For hunters or anglers seeking a modular backpack system, our LB XTR 40 and LB XTR 80 backpacks offer space for a hunting rifle, which can be secured by its stock in the length-adjustable side pocket. Hunting bows, camera tripods, or fishing rods can also be conveniently stored here.

Physical advantage

The hip belt of the Monowalker SL-X Carbon Packframe is made of dimensionally stable Evazote foam. The free-swinging ratchet buckle on the hip belt is attached to a wraparound, two-piece hip belt shell. This allows the load to be distributed compactly and transferred to the hips. The free-swinging suspension does not restrict your range of motion.Localized stress on the shoulders, neck, or back muscles—which can occur when carrying a very heavy backpack—is eliminated, even though you can carry up to 50 kg of gear. The load distribution relieves pressure on your knees both uphill and downhill, since you’re now carrying only half the gear.

The disk brake

On steep descents, a mechanical disc brake will stop your trailer or can be used as a drag brake. Even pausing on steep climbs will be a real break because with a pulled disc brake you can lean with your entire body weight in the Monowalker Fatmate and relax, while the Monowalker and the loaded equipment rests in the carabiners on the hip belt and on the wheel. With pulled discbrake, you may store the cart at the wall ( e.g. in the train, in your apartment or when using a public restroom on your hike)

Handles

The Monowalker Fatmate handles – made of aircraft aluminium – are adjustable in their width and height according the body height  and hip width to fit for small or wide hips. The handles are  covered with foam pads.The discbrake can be activated from the left handle and has not to be hold when using it as drag-brake, due to a micro friction inside the lever, that holds the pre-adjusted position.

Fatmate tire

The Fatmate tire ( 20″x10”/ dia.406mm width 100mm) has a Kevlar belt protection layer inside and prevents punctures.
The tire runs perfect on hard trails and on soft grounds like snow and sand.Thanks to integrated Kevlar protection, most thorns, sharp stones, and splinters are reliably deflected.But anyone who ventures truly far knows: there are places in this world where nature is stronger than the best tire. That’s why we also equip the Monowalker with the Tannus Armour anti-puncture system. It is a tough, elastic foam inlay that protects the inner tube 100% from the hardest thorns. And all this with only 250g of additional weight.
