Hiking with Kids

Escape the daily grind and dive into adventure

Getting out into nature with young children often comes down to one thing: transportation. A tent, sleeping bag, food—and a child on top of that—it’s almost too much to carry. Strollers and bike trailers are only partially suitable for rough terrain and struggle on hiking trails and alpine routes due to narrow paths, roots, and rocks. Baby carriers quickly push Mom and Dad to their limits and leave no room for extra gear. But what could be better than leaving everyday life behind, soaking in the forest, and experiencing nature with the kids?

The Monowalker Fatmate is the “off-road child carrier” for real outdoor adventures. It is the only single-track, off-road transport system that makes possible exactly what was missing until now: family adventures without compromise. It carries camping gear while simultaneously allowing for the transport of small children, restoring the family’s mobility. It is pulled by the Monowalker SL-X Carbon Packframe.

Experience nature. Feel freedom. Be on the go together.

As a couple, you’d love to resume your outdoor activities after the birth of your children. Hiking in the mountains, mountaineering, tackling via ferrata routes, and sleeping under the open sky. In the past, you carried everything you needed yourself.

  • Tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad
  • Provisions for several days or weeks
  • Water and water purification systems
  • Cooking gear

Family hiking vacations and weekend micro-adventures with kids can become a challenge if you don’t want to end up carrying all the gear yourself. Donkey trekking or hiking with a goat may sound romantic and rustic—but it presents new challenges for both people and animals.

The limiting factor is the human body

Backpack systems and child carriers are technically advanced, but they do not solve the fundamental problem: In Western countries, people carry the load using only a few contact points—the shoulders and hips.

Distributing the load forward, with pockets in the abdominal and chest areas, is a great option and improves access to equipment you need quickly. With every kilogram, the pressure on muscles, joints, and blood circulation increases.

Even the best carrying system cannot prevent

  • fatigue from setting in more quickly
  • mobility from being restricted
  • energy consumption from rising dramatically
  • the risk of injury from increasing
  • The human body is the limit, not the equipment.

With the Monowalker Fatmate, you can focus again on what really matters: spending time together, stress-free and relaxed

The alternative to hiking with a donkey is the Monowalker Fatmate, a foldable, all-terrain, single-track expedition trailer that shifts a large portion of the load away from your body. 50–70% of your gear is transferred to the Monowalker Fatmate. The child sits in a seat shell or infant carrier.

Food, diapers, sleeping bags and the family tent roll along behind the Monowalker, packed compactly. The child can sleep peacefully while the parents enjoy nature.

The Monowalker LB XTR 40 pack sack or LB XTR 80 pack sack can play a key role: Detached from the Monowalker SL-X Carbon Packframe, it serves as a pack sack on the Monowalker Fatmate. 50–70% of the gear weight rolls on the Monowalker. On day trips, via ferrata routes, or at bouldering events, the 40 L or 80 L pack sack transforms into a full-fledged backpack when paired with the Monowalker SL-X Carbon Packframe. And the bouldering mat can roll along on the Monowalker.

Limits? Yes, there are topographical limits for the Monowalker Fatmate, but that’s a matter of planning. The Monowalker Fatmate reaches its limit—or rather, the user reaches their limit—when carrying extreme loads of over 45 kg, on very steep uphill trails, during climbing sections, or on extremely obstructed paths with large boulders in gorges. But—and this is what makes it special—the LB XTR 80 pack sack can be attached to the Monowalker Carbon SL-X pack frame. The Monowalker Fatmate is folded up and carried. This allows you to navigate a difficult section.
