Description

Monowalker Loadbag XTR LB 80 backpack bag

The Monowalker XTR LB 80 bag, made of Cordura 500D and Hypalon, is both a backpack and a bag in one. It can be used in combination with the Monowalker SL-X Carbon-fiber Packframe as a fully functional hunting backpack or expedition backpack. The intention behind this design was to offer Monowalker users dual functionality. Pack your gear in the Monowalker XTR LB 80 bag, detached from the Monowalker SL-X Carbon-fiber packframe, and let the Monowalker Fatmate expedition trailer carry your load. It acts as the carrier to your base camp, comfortably handling 50% of your gear load. At base camp, you attach the Monowalker XTR LB 80 bag to the Monowalker SL-X Carbon-fiber Packframe to tackle the via ferrata, summit climb, or bouldering route. To do this, you hang the pack sack on the top of the Monowalker SL-X Carbon-fiber Packframe and secure it to the frame with 6 additional straps.

Technical features

Features:

  • MOLLE belts on the right and left accommodate extra pouches.
  • Optional: Magnetic-mechanical closure adapters allow you to attach MOLLE-compatible pouches, which you can magnetically attach and detach in seconds.
  • Two additional rear pockets with waterproof zippers hold gear.
  • A zippered mesh pocket and a slip pocket organize the inside of your backpack.
  • An externally accessible rain cover protects against even the heaviest downpours.

For hunters or anglers looking for a modular hunting backpack, our Monowalker XTR LB 40 & 80 models offer space for a hunting rifle, which can be secured by its rifle stock in the length-adjustable side pocket. Hunting bows, camera tripods, or fishing rods can also be conveniently stored here.

The practical roll-top closure allows you to use the backpack open to transport bulky equipment. When unwrapped, the Monowalker XTR LB 80 backpack is 90 cm long. With the double-wrapped closure, it measures 87 cm and can be compressed to 77 cm.

It can also be rolled down to a compact 50 x 13 cm. This allows you to  carry it empty, ready for immediate use. Looking for a comfortable way to carry a packraft on your back? The Monowalker XTR LB 80 bag provides ample space. The bag itself weighs only 1.3 kg (2,8lbs). As a complete expedition backpack, it weighs 3.2 kg (7 lbs) with the Monowalker SL-X Carbon-fiber Packframe.

The back panel of the LB XTR 80 bag is made of abrasion-resistant Hypalon, a material proven in kayaks and packrafts as a base layer. When the Monowalker XTR LB 80 rests on the Monowalker frame, the Hypalon protects against damage and abrasion.

Due to its size, it is only partially compatible with the Monowalker Fatmate in its backpack configuration when used as a harness, as the bottom of the fully packed backpack may collide with the Monowalker frame. We believe that a fully loaded Monowalker XTR LB  40 combined with a fully loaded Monowalker Fatmate would be more than enough for the user. The idea of our Monowalker concept is, after all, to relieve the user.

FAQ

Carbon – developed for extreme loads

Carbon fiber composites were originally developed where maximum strength at minimum weight is crucial: in aviation and cycling sport

The fiber structure of modern high-performance fibers, such as the T700 carbon used in the Monowalker Packframe, achieves tensile strengths of around 4,900 MPa.**

But the decisive advantage lies not only in its strength. Carbon possesses exceptional specific stiffness – that is, stiffness relative to its weight. This means you get the structural stability of a solid frame – at a significantly lower weight. The Monowalker Carbon Packframe is 40% lighter than a comparable aluminum construction of a classic aluminum packframe.

The underestimated advantage: vibration damping

Aluminum frames (whether used in backpacks or as pack frames) transmit vibrations almost unfiltered.Carbon, on the other hand, consists of a composite of fibers and a resin matrix that processes mechanical energy differently. Micro-vibrations – which occur when walking over scree, roots, or steep descents – are partially absorbed.

The result is only noticeable after many hours in the field:

  • less fatigue in the shoulders and hips
  • more stable load distribution
  • smoother carrying experience

This difference becomes particularly apparent with heavy loads or on uneven terrain.

** Carbon facts about our carbon frame

T700 carbon fiber is a very common, high-strength carbon fiber used in aerospace engineering, originally developed by the Japanese company Toray Industries. It belongs to the so-called standard modulus high-performance fibers, which offer a very good balance of strength, stiffness, and cost.

What does “T700” mean?

The designation T700 is a material class within Toray’s carbon fibers. It describes a fiber with specific mechanical properties, in particular:

Typical properties:
Tensile strength approx. 4,900 MPa ca. 4.900 MPa
Modulus of elasticity approx ca. 230 GPa
Density ca. 1,8 g/cm³
Elongation at break ca. 2,1 %

What does 4,900 MPa tensile strength mean?

MPa (megapascal) is a unit of mechanical stress.

1 MPa = 1 million newtons per square meter

A tensile strength of 4,900 MPa means:

➡ The fiber can withstand 4,900 million newtons per square meter before it breaks.

For comparison:

Material Zugfestigkeit
alloy ~300–600 MPa
steel ~400–800 MPa
titanium ~900–1100 MPa
T700 Carbonfibre ≈ 4900 MPa

Carbon fibers can therefore achieve more than 5 to 10 times the strength of metal, at a significantly lower weight.
